Jai Raghilda Oyl came from a well-off plebeian family with a five hundred year history in the shipping and trade business back to seagoing trade on Old Earth that was by their revered ancestor Cole Oyl thru his eldest son Castor, not the flaky flapper Olive.

The so-called Unification Wars in the 34 Tauri System prompted the family to send most of Jai's generation to boarding schools far away from the conflicts. Jai earned her Scientiae Appliquée Baccalaureus Ordinaire Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics and Interplanetary Trade from Londinium University. Baccalauréat Diplôme Série Économiques et Sociales from Albion Lycée Académie. Few of her parent's generation survived the war and its aftermath.

All that remained of Jai's inheritance was an outdated Firefly Kei-64 light-lightbulk cutter Aught-Two (40 ton capacity not even the Aught-Three sloop with 120 ton capacity) named “Necessity” that was in the shop and in hock. Jai ran slowboat boost and coast runs between Shadow and Persephone for a year to pay off the debts and repairs then settled on Hale's Moon (cheap dockage) to try to build a life as an independent trader: Necessity Trading.

Hale's Moon was a fair place to pick up business and crew. Most attempts at salvage and trade missions ran afoul of organ-leggers, pirates, slavers, alliance loyalists and the other various vermin that are the bane of indy light and mid-bulk cargo traders. In other words, she was a failure.

After her ship was badly damaged by pirates posing as Alliance Military, she took a job as a pilot with the Consolidated Associated Traders of Zenobia (CATZ). A better business woman than pilot, Jai managed to forge a network of 10 trade offices and 12 moorages for Zenobia's Behemoth Class Bulk Cargo Frigates on various planets and moons of the 34 Tauri System.
